I have lived around the seacoast area of New Hampshire all my life, including quite a few years in southern Maine. I was born in New York City, Belleview Hospital to be exact. I'll tell people that's my excuse for the way I am. Actually, both of my parents were commercial artists living and working in the city. At a little under a year of age, they moved to North Hampton New Hampshire. It was here that I got my taste for photography, being given a little Kodak camera, and a bit later, a Polaroid. I would take pictures of everything that caught my eye. My father always had numerous cameras laying around. Also, at this time I fell in love with the bicycle, riding everywhere I could. You will see the bicycle as one of my subjects in the gallery. To this day, cameras and bicycles are a match made in heaven for me. Being on the bike allows me to places that I could not access by automobile. And then when needed, go on by foot.

It's my quest for those iconic images that keep driving me on. S. Bakula

How did I get the name of Snake Coolio?

The idea for it started when my girlfriend and I were walking around the clothing department of a store commenting on the various styles. She was recently retired and as we talked the subject of what new persona would you take on in retirement, as it would be a whole new life in a way. I immediately knew what mine was to be.

As most of us know you can't give yourself a nickname, because that would be lame. You have to have the name bestowed upon you by your peers. In this case I combined nicknames given to me by two individuals. The name Snake came about one day at work when I was pressure testing some used flexible steam hose. The hose failed the test and blew up with a loud pop, and it danced threateningly around the table like a Cobra. A co-worker who I think was catching some Zs at the nearby sandblast booth, suddenly sprang up exclaiming SNAKE! After that incident Snake was what he called me.

Now Coolio came about from a supervisor would play with my last name; Bakula. Calling out in a lyrical way Coo Coo Coolio. And this became my name going forward. I felt that the names would work together well.

And with a few choice articles of clothing

my new photographer's persona,

Snake Coolio.
